The College of Business Student Computer Lab (CSCL) is a student-only computing resource paid for in full by the technology fee currently assessed to each COB course credit hour. Each COB course has a technology fee associated to it, ranging from $5 per credit hour to $15 per credit hour. The level of technology used in the course determines the actual fee amount.

The student lab is outfitted with 18 computers, two black & white printers and one scanner.  We have one ADA compliant station.

The CSCL is staffed by students paid by the technology fee fund.

Tentative Pay Scales

What kind of student jobs does the technology fee fund? Fundamentally, there will be three levels of paid positions for students. Lab Monitors will monitor the lab for equipment abuse and operational support; Lab Mentors will provide content support for COB classes; Lab Managers will help coordinate and run the labs. All types of jobs are open to all COB students.

How is the technology fee applied? Starting in Fall 2001, students taking COB classes will have a technology fee applied to their registration fees. No student will pay more than $120 in technology fees to the COB in any one semester. The more technology intense COB courses (e.g. Information Systems) have a $15/credit hour technology fee applied; all others have a $5/credit hour fee applied.

What is the College of Business Open Lab? The COB Open Lab is a computer lab funded by the COB technology fee. As such, it will be open to COB students 60 hours a week. It will house at least 20 computer stations and multiple printers. If funding permits, a scanner and a copier will be included.

How can I impact what the fee is spent for? There are several levels of involvement you can take. First, suggestions may be made to the Associate Dean or any COB faculty; second, you can become a Lab Monitor or a Lab Mentor and help with suggestions on lab operations; finally, you can offer to be on the Student Advisory Board that provides input into lab management.

There are four job descriptions available in the College of Business Student Computer Lab (CSCL). When possible, all jobs will be filled first by students enrolled in COB courses and paying a technology fee. All students accepting one of these positions are required to meet all eligibility requirements imposed by the University for student employment. In addition, some jobs require additional work characteristics (e.g. course topic familiarity for Lab Mentors). All students accepting a position will be required to attend an orientation meeting that will take place prior to the beginning of the semester.  Applications for both Summer 2008 and for Fall 2008 are available for download.

Lab Monitor: The Lab Monitor will staff the lab during the agreed upon assigned time  period. Below is a set of tasks included, but not limited to, the tasks  for the monitor position: Provide technical and administrative support  for computer classrooms (you will receive the necessary training); Report  any hardware problems; Report any software problems; Monitor student  access by filling out usage reports; Report students who exhibit disruptive  behavior; Make sure lab facility is presentable for classes (pick up paper, arrange chairs, etc.); Make sure printers have paper; When closing  the lab, turn off lights, projectors and lock doors.

There is NO expectation of a Lab Monitor to help students with programming assignments, software specific or hardware specific problems beyond those necessary  to start up a lab machine or printer.

Lab Mentor: In addition to the Lab Monitor tasks, a Lab Mentor is expected to: Provide  basic content support to students in the lab on a particular class or  topic area; be able to answer course or topic specific questions; Work  with a COB faculty member to ensure their help is consistent with the  course.

Lab Mentors are paid at a level higher than Lab Monitors  and the Lab Mentor IS EXPECTED to help students with a particular  topic or course.

Lab Manager: A Lab Manager has agreed to take on the Lab Monitor duties and to help with the overall management of the Open Lab. Currently, there is only one Lab Manager position scheduled per semester. One requirement necessary for a student to apply for a Lab Manager position is for that student to have successfully completed a full semester as a Lab Monitor/Lab Assistant/Lab Mentor. The management duties include but are not limited to: Scheduling open lab hours; Coordinating replacements for missing Lab Monitors; Conducting Customer Service surveys; Providing quality feedback to COB on operations.

Lab Instructors: Lab Instructors will be chosen through an application and recommendation process. The Lab Instructor will be in charge of  a QUAN 201 Class Lab. In addition to the basic Lab Monitor tasks, a  Lab Instructor is responsible for working closely with the QUAN 201  faculty/instructor to deliver a series of content oriented lab classes.  The Lab Instructor is expected to help the faculty/instructor for QUAN  201 with course tasks including: grading tests, help with office hours,  mentoring students, taking a role in the lab section,  providing  guidance for students in completing their labs, grading the lab as pass/fail  in compliance with stated criteria, reporting grades to instructors,  reporting incidents of cheating or other disruptive behavior, proctoring  tests/exams in the large QUAN 201 sections, and other activities as  identified by the QUAN 201 instructors.

All students will be provided with feedback throughout the semester regarding their overall performance and with a final evaluation.

If you are interested in applying for one of these jobs, please complete a preliminary application and timeslot request form to Dr. Ben Martz, Dwire Hall 238. Final decisions will not be made until just prior to the beginning of classes next semester. Applications may be found on the bulleting board opposite Dwire 137, CSCL Computer Lab, or Online here.

1. Documents get stuck in a Print Queue?

-          Check to make sure the queue has really stopped due to an error, and that it's not just a slow print job.  Look under the "Status" of the print job that's holding things up to see what the error says (see below).

-          If the problem cannot be solved immediately, the best solution is to change the printer port to another nearby printer (see the Ports tab under printer's properties).  When a port is switched on a printer, any print jobs that were held up in the queue will automatically begin printing on the printer you've selected.  Be sure to post a sign to let users know of the change

Some common status errors and solutions include:

o   Paper Jam – Can be fixed by clearing the Jam.  Print jobs should continue automatically, or you can right-click on the document and have it Restart.

o   Network Unreachable – usually caused when the printer is powered off or the network cable is unplugged.  If plugging in or powering on doesn't fix the error, there could be some other hardware problem.  Redirect the Queue to another printer and post a sign.

o   Spooling – a document that's stuck in the Spooling state, but never completes or goes away, will need to be removed by an admin.

o   DRE errors – any status errors that refer to the DRE or equitrac engine are server related and will require an admin.  (Recently these errors were caused by slow PDF printing, resulting in a delay in communication between the clients and servers.  Any real equitrac DRE errors will probably result in printing failing everywhere, so you'll want to contact an admin.)

2. A users' document prints out with the wrong formatting or layout?

-          If a print job comes out differently than how a user expected it (stretched or shrunk, chopped off, tiled, inverted, etc.) this is usually due to some incorrect setting under the print properties for that particular document.  This is not something we will usually reimburse for, but you should help the user with choosing the correct print settings and formatting options for their document type.

3. Documents start printing with smudges, smears, wrinkles, tears, etc?

If print jobs start coming out with visible artifacts or damage, you should immediately take the problem printer offline and change its port.  These marks are usually caused by a worn or damaged fuser in the printer, and we'll have to call it in for service.  The sooner we catch these, the better.

4. A user wants to print using their own paper?

-          If a user wants to print on their own special paper (transparency, colored, etc) they should be encouraged to take their work to the campus print shop.  If they insist on using a lab printer, try and direct them to one that isn't getting used much and have them use tray 1.  Be sure to warn them that they probably won't be reimbursed if anything goes wrong.
