About the Program

This minor has two options: one for Business students and one for non-Business students.

Finance encompasses both the science and the art of managing money and investments. The study of finance provides students with an understanding of numerous financial theories such as the relation between risk and return, the factors that determine asset values, and strategies for minimizing the risk exposure of both corporations and investors. An understanding of these theories helps students develop the ability to make sound and practical business and personal investment decisions.

For Non-Business Students: A finance minor for non-business students compliments degrees such as Mathematics, Economics and Engineering very well.  For math students interested in actuarial sciences, a fundamental understanding of finance is a must.  For economics students, this minor will round out the theoretical principles that they have already learned with direct application to the business world.  For engineers, it helps because odds are that they will be managing large projects at some point, so the managing of cash flows is vitally important.

Focus of Study

The UCCS Finance minor curriculum trains students to think logically regarding financial problems and to formulate sound financial decisions, policies, and practices.

Program Requirements

For Business Students:

College of Business undergraduate students are encouraged and can easily pursue a minor in our business specializations. All minors for business students are 9 credit hours and can be applied to business elective requirements as well as open electives (adding no additional credits or time to degree completion). Each minor allows a student to further their business knowledge and differentiate themselves from others by adding another credential to their resume.

For Non-Business Students:

The College of Business recommends all undergraduate students consider a business minor because no matter your major, you will likely be working in a business! Our minor for non-business students is broken into two parts - a business core curriculum (3 courses) that provides a base knowledge in business and then four subject-specific courses that allow students a deeper dive on a specific business discipline - giving students basic business knowledge as well as specialized business knowledge that can give them a competitive edge in the workplace.

To declare the business minor, students must have a 2.7 cumulative CU GPA and have successfully passed ENGL 1310 and one college level math course (MATH 1040 is the lowest level math course accepted for this requirement).
