John Rubley, MBA (2021)

"UCCS offers several developmental opportunities for students and the program has helped build my professional network in the Colorado Springs area."

  • What is your background?

I’m originally from Auburn, Alabama.  I have a Liberal Arts degree from West Virginia University and I’ve been an officer in the Army for the last 11 years.  I’m currently a Captain in Army Special Forces, stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.

  • What were the factors that led you to pursuing the UCCS MBA/MSA?

I wanted a reputable degree that could build on my military experience and would easily translate with civilians.  Access to a traditional campus environment was an important factor and the flexibility of evening and online classes ensured I could pursue the program at home or while deployed.

  • How would you describe your experience as a student in the MBA/MSA program?

My experience has been great.  The program is flexible and my professors have been very accommodating to the demands of my military career.  UCCS offers several developmental opportunities for students and the program has helped build my professional network in the Colorado Springs area.

  • Do you have any particular memory of a classroom experience, professor or fellow student that stands out?

I attended a 10-day study abroad to Paris and London while on holiday leave.  Not only was the study abroad a quick and convenient way to earn credit hours toward my concentration in International Business, it was an informative and fun way to see Europe while providing exposure to several careers outside of the military.  I met a lot of great people and still maintain contact with fellow students, professors and professionals from the trip.

  • Can you talk about your career to date and any way your education impacted where you are today?

As an Officer in Army Special Forces, I have experience in organizational leadership, strategic planning, management and operations.  Applying my military experiences to concepts in the MBA program has enhanced my career while providing professional building blocks that have set me apart from my peers.

  • What would you tell other professionals with a military background if they asked you about pursuing an MBA/MSA at UCCS?

    Go for it!
